Over the last month or so I’ve been working on new t-shirt designs for my friends band o’death. We ended up going with 3 different designs. 2 were printed on a round of 100 t-shirts each and then a 3rd design was printed on a limited amount of gray sweatshirts.
I’ve been designing and printing t-shirts for a few years now but have never really taken on larger jobs since the way I print is a very diy way, by simple putting a t-shirt down on my printing table, holding the screen down and printing with a small hand squeegie. This way works great is you are only doing a few t-shirts at a time and don’t mind if they all look slightly different, I actually prefer to print my designs this way. But over the last year I’ve been asked to make more and more band shirts and I prefer not to send off my designs to get printing by anyone else, mostly because Portland does not really have a good t-shirt printer on hand. So I decided to take the money from these last few jobs and buy myself a 4 color t-shirt press! I used it for the first time on these shirts and couldn’t be happier! This this is super sturdy and is very easy to use.
I’m hoping this will allow me to feel more confident with my printing skills and open my self up to taking on more jobs and providing something in the community that doesn’t really exist. I can also charge a bit less if I’m doing both the designing and printing.
Below you will find a few shots from the last few days of printing. o’death will be taking these shirts on tour with them on their opening slot for the great band Murder By Death. I will be heading down to the Boston date if you want to come hang out!

My good friends in the band CASPIAN are currently on a tour of Asia and Australia. As I understand this is the first time they are going to a lot of these places. They were kind enough to ask me to design a Tshirt for the tour including dates on the back and all! I actually submitted 6 or 7 designs to them but this is the one that we went with! I really enjoyed some of the other designs so they might see the light of day at some point in the near future but probably not as a band tshirt.
I do not have any of these shirts. they are only available through the band on tour and possibly after.
Dates on the back of the shirt.
I found this picture on Instagram of a fan who bought the shirt. My first view of an actual printed shirt since they were printed halfway around the world. Sorry for stealing your photo for my blog.

Over the past week I had a great opportunity to contribute to my friends Sean Mewshaw and Desiree Van Til’s new feature film titled Tumbledown. Staring Joe Manganiello, Jason Sudeikis and Rebecca Hall. Read a little about it here.
I did a poster for Sean’s play that he directed awhile back at SPACE Gallery called Killer Joe. Funny story about that poster, as soon as I started to work on it my computer completely died and I was without any way of creating this digitally. Even scanning images became impossible and half way through designing the poster Sean let me barrow his old Mac computer so I could finish the print and tighten everything up in Photoshop so I could give him a digital version to promote with.
I’m currently working on a new piece for his movie. It will eventually be a ‘fake’ record cover for a real character in the movie and songs are currently being written by the great Damien Jurado. So it’s not entirely fake. I can’t show the final product yet but I’m very excited to see what happens with this. I also sent about 13 posters their way to be hung in the back round of the movie which should be interesting!

Wow. it’s been awhile since I posted anything on here! Sorry about that. I’m going to try and update this blog a bit more with current projects. If you do come to this blog every once and awhile please don’t think I’ve totally stopped updating and taking pictures of my process. To tell you the truth I’ve been using Instagram a lot more then any other social media platform. You can follow me at (krisgjohnsen). Please do! There is lots more drawing and process shots on there that I used to post on this blog, you’ll also see things first before I post them other places.
This is a new poster that I just designed for one of my favorite bands Arms And Sleepers. It’s at Space Gallery in Portland, ME. They have not played here in a few years and haven’t really been playing out in about a year since I saw them in Cambridge last December in 2012 so this show is really not to be missed, they are joined by Lymbyc Systym who I’ve never seen and Portland local An Anderson.
I’m debating making a small run of screen printed versions of this poster. If so it will change a little and the colors may be slightly different but the same basic design will be there, I will try and stay updated with process pictures if I go forward with this.
Here’s two of my favorite tracks from the headlining bands…

Finished up a small batch of isobell band tshirts yesterday to finish my work on their concept art for their new album Sea Spells. They also had their album release show at SPACE Gallery last night. I also decided to make a small edition of 20 posters using the same screen I made for the tshirts.
If your interested in picking up one of these Alternative Apparel tshirts or posters please get in contact with the band, they are very approachable and I don’t have any left.
Hallway drying area since I don’t have storage for 30+ wet tshirts.

Here’s a new poster myself and Kimberly Convery designed for the What Cheer? Brigade/Math The Band and The Outfits show at SPACE Gallery on May 25th. We had a ton of fun drawing and printing this poster. Basically we just hung out for a few hours and drew up a design for it, not much thinking ahead or planning out, we figured whatever happens, happens. We did the same while printing it, The digital version above has very specific colors for the text while we left the image area plain, but while printing we played around with different color gradients and changing up the colors a lot so each print is a bit different color wise while the black print is always the same. We finished these last night and couldn’t be happier. They will be for sale the night of the show for $5 or something cheap like that so please pick one up from us! I’ll those the leftovers online afterwords or email me at Krisgjohnsen@gmail.com if you are interested. There is an edition of 100 and they are printed on 70lb kraft paper.
